Police and Pharmacists Team Up to Thwart Drug Diversion

April 22, 2017 by John Burke

Any law enforcement officer who has worked in drug diversion knows the importance of the pharmacy profession. Myself and my colleagues have found pharmacists to be incredibly savvy allies, especially when it comes to weeding out individuals who are trying to scam the system.

A recent conference at Auburn University’s School of Pharmacy saw law enforcement officials, pharmacists, and other health professionals team up to tackle the ongoing problem of prescription drug abuse.1  It does not matter whether such a collaboration is initiated by pharmacy or law enforcement. Ideally, every town, city, and county would practice the teamwork demonstrated at this conference. [Read more…]

Securing Medicine Cabinets: How Pharmacists Can Help

February 22, 2017 by John Burke

One topic of prescription drug diversion not discussed as much as it ought to be these days involves your medicine cabinet. It is a huge source of prescription drug abuse for youths between 12 and 17 years of age, mostly because it is easily accessible and because teenagers have little ability to doctor shop or pass forged or altered prescriptions.

This would be enough of a concern if youths were the only individuals accessing these drugs, but there are others with access, too, whom you might not ever suspect. A Dose of Reality

February 16, 2016 by John Burke

During my careers with the Cincinnati Police and the Warren County Drug Task Force, I was occasionally reminded that law-enforcement officers are not immune to addiction, including addiction to prescription drugs. My office arrested several of its own officers and their relatives, usually spouses.

Contrary to the belief of some individuals, my office did not treat these drug abusers differently than other offenders. In fact, many former police officers in our country have lost their jobs for not reporting their addiction or asking for assistance before being caught. I firmly believe that individuals who are entrusted with enforcing laws should lose their jobs if they are convicted of a felony. [Read more…]

How BIG is the problem?

Year after year, state and local law enforcement statistics indicate that pharmaceuticals are almost 30% of the overall drug problem in the United States, running a close second only marijuana abuse. However, until recently, law enforcement, health care professionals, and the general public have placed little emphasis on this huge problem.
